Back Road to Makena, 2004

Not so many years ago, there was a back way to the beach from Kula. It was called the Makena Road. It began as a bumpy turn into the dirt just below where the Ulupalakua vineyard is today and took you on a winding scenic tour of the lower ranch lands. Along the way down you side slipped around the eroded curves and bends chasing cattle through the heated Kiawe.

Less than half an hour later, it spit you out in a cloud of dust at the water's edge somewhere near Makena landing. Compared to the hour it would take to drive the other way, it was worth the car wash.
