I’m working on costgallery.com at my desk in the barn. It’s a bit surreal to be back on Maui (I haven’t lived here for 16 years). Many things have changed on Maui, and many things are just the same. I do feel like my dad’s work captures this incredibly well. Working on this website over the last few months is helping me reconnect with the place I grew up. Home is a strange concept when you’ve been away from it for so long. You start to put home in other things: friends, apartments, relationships, activities. When the world keeps changing, it’s so beautiful that a painting can stay basically the same. All those little brush strokes, put down with time and care so many years ago, reflect light in almost the same way. Maybe a painting can carry a sense of home?
