North of the Landing, 1990

When I first came to Maui, Makena was a place at the end of Kihei. I don't think Wailea existed until it was developed. I might be wrong, but that's my impression of it.

We used to get to Makena by going down through Ulupalakua Ranch on Makena Road which came out where the big hotels are going up today. The Maui Prince Hotel built a new section of road that bypasses the route that runs along the water. The old road is pretty chopped up now but some of it is still intact and being used by residents and fishermen.

There was a beach my wife and I used to frequent along the old road that we had a hard time finding the other day. It's kind of a unique experience misplacing a beach. It can be disconcerting, to put it kindly, when a place you once knew as remote and secluded is so intruded upon by development that you can actually find yourself wondering just where a beach went.
