Kokee Waters, 1994

I was on Kauai hiking with friends and keeping an eye out for subject matter. We went up to the Kokee area and hiked deep into the forest. We came across a waterway that meandered through lush gingers and koa trees until it suddenly opened onto Waimea Canyon. The contrasting views were striking. Upstream, the scene was completely lush and green. The view downstream was open enough to give you vertigo, dropping into the rusty reds and browns of the canyon. I explored the stream and discovered several ponds while my hiking partners took a trail along the canyon edge. The water was crystal clear and cold and the day was quite hot. I'd only intended to cool my feet at first, but within minutes I was swimming.
