Hammock

Hammock, Acrylic on canvas, 2000

Hammock was painted from the garden of the Silver Cloud Inn looking out towards the island of Kahoolawe. Maui is always beautiful in the late afternoon sun. We'd attended a wedding in the Silver Cloud garden at that hour as the light streamed though the trees. It bathed everything in amber. The hammock took on a stained glass translucency, begging to be the center of attention. I returned to the garden a week later …

Summer Fog

Summer Fog, 1990

The Vierra's live a couple of jogs up the road from us. Our road bends a lot and each bend has its central figures. The Vierra's place has so much balance and symmetry within its bend that I've painted it twice, once from above looking down and this time from below, looking to the mountain. The clouds roll in occasionally surrounding the house in a thick fog, even in summer.

In the open pastures of the upper areas of Haleakala, the morning air is filled with the light and sounds of another day where life moves easily. Rolling up into the sky, the summer sun gets warm too slowly and then, at once, too quickly.
