Grandmother Jacaranda
Maui's 2020 springtime jacaranda season was missed by many people. I did a portrait of a grandmother jacaranda to capture it for posterity. To my delight, as I was beginning the piece I discovered an unopened 50 year old tube of Ultramarine Violet oil paint in my drawer. I twisted open the cap and a glistening violet squeezed onto my palette as fresh as the day it was made. It seemed fitting to use something this rare to paint something special. Our lavender trees are almost sacred in Kula. They drop seed pods, (which define them as female) and the trees have sprung up throughout the area over the decades. The lavender gets more breathtaking every year.
