Echoes of Kalawao, 2011

The sense of isolation is powerful in Kalawao on Molokai. The solitude is accompanied by a faint echo from the cathedral of cliffs that edge the peninsula. It hushes conversation and compels you to listen. It might be the ocean swells rushing up the lava coastline for miles in either direction. It might be the salty wind moving through the vegetation. One cannot walk along the footpaths beneath the Kalawao cliffs without considering all the human drama that has taken place here. There is a moment, however small, where you wonder if this might account for the distant echoes. Whether you believe in such things or not, it passes through your mind. The story of those who came here before might be whispering in those echoes.
