I've read that, in mythological terms, water represents the unconscious, and the water's edge taps into psychological archetypes of our emergence into awareness. I can't speak to that, but I will say that in my never ending fascination with the seashore, it isn't the water or the sand, it's where the two meet that I find most interesting.
I could probably spend a lifetime painting the elements along the shoreline. The sand is constantly being reshaped with every lapping wave. I've often thought that the translucency in the water's edge had the quality of art glass and that a glass artist could find much inspiration there.
In this canvas, I took advantage of the blending abilities of oil to reflect the sky in the smoothly shaped surfaces left by the retreating waves. It seemed appropriate to name this one Beach Glass.
